As far as the Earth School of Ju Jutsu is concerned, mob and mass attacks are conducted by a highly skilled and motivated group of individuals functioning as a cohesive unit. These attacks may be armed or unarmed.
Although many schools regularly practice multi-man combat, the attackers rarely attack in unison. Even in the movies, the hero defeats the mob because they all attack in sequence - not all at the same time. The Earth School is one of only 3 schools in the world who routinely practice defences to large numbers of simultaneous attackers.
The Earth School practices mob and mass attacks in combinations of the following ways:
Situations
| In open areas, such as an open field (on even and uneven terrain). | |
| In confined spaces, such as a room. | |
| In small or narrow areas, such as a hallway. | |
| In dark areas. |
Scenarios
| Intense, where the attackers’ sole intention is to kill the defender. | |
| Intimidations, where the attackers taunt and attempt to flank the defender prior to attack. | |
| Known surprise, where the attackers may or may not suddenly attack after pretending to be friendly. | |
| Unknown surprise, where the defender is attacked en-masse without warning. | |
| Defensive, where the defender must protect a third person. |
Intensity
Intensity is a measure of how determined the attackers are.| Low. | |
| Medium. | |
| High. |
Attack Formations
| A straight line, from left-to-right, forming a battle front. | |
| A straight line, one-behind-the-other. | |
| A mobile circle or semi-circle, where the attackers surround or flank the defender. | |
| A small static circle, where the attackers have surrounded the defender, are within range, and are already prepared to strike. This formation is limited to 6, since that is the maximum number that can physically fit around the defender at such close range. | |
| An arrow-head ( /\ ). | |
| Any formation with one or more breakaways. A breakaway is an attacker who "breaks out" from the rest of the group, and operates independently from them. | |
| No formation, or any combination of formations. |
Arms
| One, several or all attackers armed with a variety of hand weapons. | |
| The defender may be armed or unarmed. |
Mode
| Simultaneous attacks, where all attackers attack at the same time. | |
| Sequential attacks, where the attackers attack one-after-another, in quick succession. | |
| Attack waves, where the attackers attack in smaller groups, one after the other. | |
| Multi-group, where the attackers attack in smaller groups, simultaneously. | |
| Uncommitted - any combination of the above. |
